Who is actually on your roof

The lead on most residential jobs is Marco, who spent eleven years running tile crews for one of the large South Florida roofing companies before going out on his own, and who still does the lift-and-relay work himself because he does not trust anybody else with a stack of somebody's original barrel tile. Dennis handles the low-slope and commercial side and has been detailing modified bitumen since before TPO turned up in this market. Between them they have re-roofed something over four hundred Broward properties.

Small crews get one thing right that big ones struggle with: the person who quotes the job is the person who does it. Nobody hands your roof to a subcontractor you never met after the contract is signed, which is where a large share of the complaints in this trade come from.

A note from Marco

I came up working tile in Hialeah and then in Broward, and the thing that eventually pushed me out on my own was quoting prices I knew were padded. There was a woman in Margate, this would have been 2012, and I was sent to sell her a whole new tile roof when what she had was maybe eleven cracked tiles and a boot. I did the job I was told to do and it bothered me for months. Started this out of my garage the next year with one truck and my brother-in-law Dennis, who at that point had never held a torch, and we did small repairs for two years before anybody trusted us with a re-roof. Still on that side of Copans, still the same phone number. If somebody tells you that you need a new roof, ask them to pull three tiles and show you. That is the whole trick.

Why not go with the big names?

Plenty of people should, honestly. Chase Roofing, Clark Roofing, SCI and the other long-established Pompano Beach outfits do good work, some of them have been here since before the Interstate, and if you want a large company with a big office and a financing department, that is a completely reasonable choice. Where a small crew wins is on the jobs the big ones would rather turn into a replacement: repairs, lift and relays, and diagnosis on a leak nobody has been able to find. Material comes from the same places either way, mostly the ABC Supply and Gulfeagle branches on Copans, and Boral and Eagle tile out of the same South Florida plants.

How to check us before you hire us

Florida runs a public register of roofing contractors through the Department of Business and Professional Regulation. Look us up, and look up everyone else you are considering, at MyFloridaLicense, and confirm the status reads current and active. Ask for the certificate of liability insurance and actually read the expiry date. Ask for two addresses of jobs finished in the last year in your own town and go and look at them from the street. None of that is unreasonable and anybody who takes it badly has told you something useful.

What we will tell you that costs us money

That your roof has six years left and does not need replacing yet. That the leak is your air handler and you want an HVAC contractor, not us. That the neighbour's quote is fair and ours is not going to beat it. That a repair will do where a replacement would pay better. Saying those things out loud is not virtue, it is the only sustainable way to run a small business in a town this size, because the alternative is a reputation you cannot outrun.
